520 _aCarinthia is more distant from the Catholic Church than other Austrian states. There are many indications that this has something to do with the political and social characteristics of the country. Thus one is amazed outside of Carinthia about unusual election results, the conflict over the Slovenian language or the high proportion of illegitimate children. In his historical investigation, Johannes Thonhauser shows how these phenomena are related to a widespread church skepticism. As a key phase for this he describes the time before the "Anschluss" in 1938, in which the National Socialism formed in resistance to an authoritarian church. At the same time solidified central memory traditions of the country, which still characterize the "Carinthian soul".
